Gone Girl isn’t like anything I’ve ever read before – and that alone is almost worth the five-star rating I give it – but I loved this book for more than its originality. Most of the characters are despicable, it’s true, but they’re also believable and endlessly fascinating. This story doesn’t exactly have a happy ending, but that, too, is fine by me (I don’t particularly care for happily-ever-afters).

Gone Girl is gritty, uncomfortable, and violent, but it’s also smart, intriguing, and excellently written – and for me, this unlikely combination of beauty and brutality made it 100% unputdownable. Highly recommended to lovers of mystery and psychological thrillers.
